Tango-Jazz, and Tango, sprinkled with a dash of Latin

Jazz tango was a big hit when introduced last year, creating a sold out crowd and people turned away at the door. Bandoneonist Ben Thomas and pianist Alex Chadsey, regularly perform for jazz clubs and milongas in Seattle and across the US. Bandoneons (the emblematic instrument of tango), are unusual concertinas, rare-not made after 1939, and extremely hard to play. Musicians who play jazz- bandoneon are even more rare.

The Seattle-based Tangabrazo brings decades of combined professional experience to create a rich ensemble sound. Their repertoire ranges from classic tango to more modern and original compositions. Ben has become infatuated with the bandoneon. In 2007, Ben Thomson studied at the elite Academia Nacional del Tango in Buenos Aires. There he trained with many of the tango greats, such as master bandoneonist, Osvaldo Montes. He has released four CDs of original compositions. He performs throughout the country and teaches music theory and history at Highline Community College.

Trained on piano since a young age, Tangabrazo’s pianist Alex Chadsey relocated to Seattle in 2007, where he is currently working with many of the Pacific Northwest’s finest Latin and jazz artists. Alex has worked with Musical Director for Joe Santiago and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra in 2007 and 2008. In 2010 he performed, recorded, and arranged music for Laura Rebolloso and the East L.A.-based chicano rock group, Quetzal. An album of Alex’s original compositions was released in 2011. www.tangabrazo.com (Ben and Alex will also teach a tango music workshop, more info on workshop page.)
